HP Academy Tip of the Month

Golf Tip of the Month: Club Selection & Dispersion – Play the Percentages

When choosing a club for your approach shot, don’t just consider the distance to the pin—think about your shot dispersion.

Every golfer has a shot pattern. Some shots go long, some short, and many miss left or right. Instead of aiming dead at the flag, ask yourself:

  • Where do I usually miss with this club?
  • Is there trouble near the pin?
  • What’s the safest area to land the ball?

Smart club selection means choosing the club that keeps your most common misses in play. That might mean clubbing up and swinging smoothly, or aiming for the center of the green, not the flag.

Play to your tendencies. Respect your dispersion. Lower scores will follow.

Drill: The Dispersion Challenge

  1. On the range, pick a target 140–160 yards away.
  2. Hit 10 shots with the same club (e.g., 7-iron).
  3. Use alignment sticks or cones to mark your landing pattern.
  4. Measure:
    • Left-to-right spread
    • Short-to-long spread

You’ll quickly see your real dispersion zone, not your “perfect shot” expectation. Next time you’re on the course, choose your club based on that zone, not just the number on the scorecard.
